Firstly we need to identify the main themes and elements of our main product so they can be represented in our ancillary products. They are:
- Religion
- Murder/Child Murderer
- Mistaken Identity
- Regret
Existing Movie Posters:
As listed on our main page, there are some films that have similar themes to our own film. Here are the movie posters of these films.
The Rite:
Above is the movie poster for the film Rite, it is a film with a religious theme and this is exemplified in the movie poster through the use of a cross. The red effect background is successful as is outlines the cross well and could also represent another theme within the film, blood shed.
Doubt:
Here is the movie poster for Doubt. Immediately the theme of the film is exemplified, through the use of a cross as the template for the poster, the use of a belfry at the top of the cross to represent the setting of the film and finally the biblical writing used as the first letter of the name of the film. We like this idea and will try to use elements of this in our own move poster.
Carrie:
Above is the film poster from Carrie, this film has the theme of 'child murderer' and this is similar to ours. As a group we have noticed the position of the crews name, which we are beginning to find as a convention of movie posters, and that they are to be found at the bottom. This poster has shown us how black, white and red work together and we may decide to use this as our colour scheme for our own work.
Trust:
Here is the movie poster for Trust, we have decided to use this poster for inspiration for our own movie poster as there are some elements within the poster we liked, for example the tagline positioned above the name of the film and the colour scheme. The use of a silhouette has also come to our attention as we could incorporate a silhouette into our movie poster to represent the theme of mistaken identity.
Conventions of a Movie Poster:
After researching different film posters we have noticed re-occurring aspects on each, and believed them to be the conventions of the film posters, here is a list of conventions that we will consider when drafting our film poster;
- Crew list positioned at the bottom, using a specific font
- Tagline included, usually above the film title
- Film title positioned center frame and large text used
- Themes represented throughout the poster to link to the film
- Colour scheme
- Release date
Draft Poster Layout:
First Draft of Movie Poster
Final Movie Poster
We have drafted a movie poster for our short film. The poster has a deconstruction and explanations on it.
Deconstruction of a Movie Poster
Our next step is to create our film poster by taking photographs and using Quark Express to construct it. We will follow the conventions but add our own style to it.
Here is our first draft as our film poster. Our movie poster consists of a crucifix, our female character praying in the window of the church, the church belfry as the top of the crucifix, and a conventional font. However, we understand that there are some elements missing and we had these pointed out to us through feedback. These points include;
- Spelling
- Credits in steel tongues
- Other features commonly found on a movie poster
- An image in the background of some candles, linking the movie poster to the film.
We feel that our first attempt of the movie poster is quite successful. We have decided to change the colour of the word hell into red, to firstly copy the film titles and to also emphasise the word through colourology.
We will work on this feedback to improve our poster and will post our final piece.

Deconstruction:
Colour- We have used a simple black and white colour scheme with a hint of red to outline the crucifix. Each of these colours represent an event within our film. The white is to show the innocence and purity of our female protagonist, but in contrast the black shows the death and mystery. The red on the other hand represents the blood loss and the danger within our film.
Setting- The belfry tower at the top of the crucifix to represent the theme of religion, and also suggests the setting of our film.
Image- The silhouette in the church window reflects our female protagonist in our film asking for forgiveness off God and her father. This could also suggest certain dialogue that is used within our film.
Written Codes- The credits are written in Steel Tonges a conventional font used on movie posters. Also the name of our film and tagline can be found on here. The font used upon this cross can also be seen in the film titles. The word hell is emphasised by been written in red. The film release date is also found upon the crucifix.
Stencil- The crucifix is the main image used on our movie poster and is highlighted by a red outline. This crucifix is a stencil for the rest of the movie poster to be mounted upon. It is also a prop used throughout our film.
