Construction

Here is a group discussion before our shoot on Wednesday 6th of March to make sure we are prepared for the day by answering some vital questions.

Test shots:

Here is us trying different shots that we want to use in our final product to see how well they work and how effective they could be. This shot is done with a plastic bottle but in the film we want to do it with a glass bottle, and to film it smashing in slow motion. This shot enable us to get the right angle by experimenting. Once we have worked out how to use slow motion effectively we will apply this to another sequence at the start of our film when blood will drip into a sink.

The second shot with the hammer wasn't as successful as the first one and we feel we need to practice this sequence before we film to enable us to get an effective attacking sequence.

Equipment:

Prior to filming on location we had to book all of the equipment we needed for the shoot. This included; A HD camera kit, a tripod, location recording kit, tripod, mini reflector and boom.

We also had to make sure we had our storyboard to follow, spare script, shooting schedule and correct props for each scene.

Filming:

Wednesday 6th March (1.30-3.30) :

Lewis, Jess and Dean on location- Rape scene at the woods and attacking scene at house.

We went out to shoot on location within our media lesson. We met at the co op car park in Norton Canes and carried the equipment to the first location where Penny had to walk past her attacker. Although the setting wasn't quite how we planned it, we ended up using a shop front on a corner. We went in and asked if it was OK to use their shop within our shot and they were co operative and allowed us to film there. Coincidentally the shop was a funeral parlor, this wasn't planned, but we thought it might add symbolism to our sequence and would be reflected at the end when Penny's father passes away. We then moved onto the wooded area and although we felt a little pressed for time it went OK  However, we didn't have enough time to shoot the whole of this shoot and decided to go back to it at a later date. The path was narrow but we made the best of a bad situation and tried to get a variation of angles to help us in the editing stages.

We then moved to our other location scheduled for that day and went to Jess' house to film the attacking scene. This went well although the shooting space was a little cramped and difficult at times to get the right camera angle, however this was the most appropriate location to shoot at.

Wednesday 6th March (3.30-5.30) :

Lewis and Jess on location- Church scenes.

We walked down to St James' Church in Norton Canes to film inside with permission off the vicar. We got Hannah to change into her dress and changed her hair to make her look older and to also show clearly a difference in time. We tried to do a focus pull but when we got to the location we found it wasn't possible to do without the distance looking artificial and obvious that we had to manipulate it. However we attempted a focus push on the candles and plan to use this as a transition between shots. We had to manipulate some of the lighting in the church to prevent a shadow to appear in the shot. We thought this shoot was successful.

Thursday 7th March (Lunch) :

Lewis Jess and Dean

We all came into the media suit and captured the footage from both cameras onto the macs and saved the footage into a new project on final cut express.

Wednesday 13th March (9:30-11:30) :

Lewis and Jess - Editing

We came into the media suit and started to edit the film. To start with we deleted any footage we didn't need and then proceeded to number each clip of footage with the numbers on the story board to make the editing process a little easier. To start with we started to edit the first part of the church scene and started to add the transitions between the shots. This took longer than expected and so we decided to save the project and return on thursday at lunch.

Thursday 14th March (12:35-1:20) :

Lewis and Jess - Editing

We continued to edit the film and started to add other clips to the sequence including the wooded scene where Penny gets attacked. At this point we decided to add a matte colour over the flashback scenes to give the impression that it happened in the past.

Monday 18th March (10 - 11:45) :

Lewis and Jess- Blood dripping scene

We went to location and set up the camera in the bathroom and practiced a few times with the fake blood. We set up the camera into slow motion mode and tried to shoot this shot, however we found that  the blood wasn't dripping quick enough for the camera to record it so we had to have two people to drip the blood so the camera would record enough blood dripping. Although messy we found this shoot was successful and captured the footage onto the mac when we returned to school.

Tuesday 19th March (3:30-5:30) :

Lewis and Jess - Editing rough cut

We finished putting all of the footage together and added the some sound effects over the footage to build up the atmosphere of the film. We did not however know how to manipulate the heart monitor and therefore inserted a picture of one and explained to our teacher that we needed to film or manipulate an image to make it look more realistic. We added what we thought was the most effective transitions and what we thought to be the most appropriate titles and credits.

Rough Cut:

Here is our rough cut.

Feedback;

After making the rough cut we gave our teacher a viewing of it. Before having peer feedback we decided as a group to criticized our own rough cut. This will help us further to understand how to improve the film. We watched the film over and stopped it at points throughout the sequence where we thought it could be improved. Once we finished the list we showed the film again to our teacher and then discussed issues both positive an negative and recorded the conversation. We have then cross referenced our points to those made on the recording to those we made, to see if there were any similarities. Listed below is our points and embedded is the conversation we had about the rough cut.

  • Ident sound effect
  • Blood drip sound
  • Heart beat sound
  • Remove diagetic sound from sink scene
  • Sound in the wooded scene
  • Change brightness of wooded scene
  • Add sound to make the wooded scene more dramatic
  • Bottle smash shot
  • Church to house transition
  • Clock sequence needs to be shorter or sped up
  • Add heart monitor sound
  • Add heart monitor visual
  • Penny's head is cut off in graveyard scene
  • Finish hospital scene
  • Add more roles to credits to emphasise the rolling credits
  • Get the overall film time up to five minutes.

From this feedback we will go and make the alterations to our film and add or change footage to improve it. Once we have done this we will submit our film as our final cut.

Additional Shots:

All three of us re-visited the location sites and took into consideration the feedback we had received in lesson to re do the shots and add in new ones. We knew it was important for us to get the bottle smashing shot right so we took a plastic bottle  to practice with. We then worked out the best angle and where to throw the bottle and went for the glass bottle. Our first attempt was unsuccessful as the bottle didn't smash so we put some stones in the area. The second attempt was successful and we were happy with the end result. Before we left location we cleaned up our glass to prevent anyone harm from the shards. We will add in these shots to make up our final cut.
